About us.

The Bicycle Society is a multiple award winning organisation that is giving cyclists priority. We currently live in a car focused society, prioritising vehicles. Our vision is to create a bicycle focused society where we priorities cyclists for every day use and of corse for fun. The UK currently has 2% of journeys by bike and this isn't enough! With everyone coming together we can really make a difference.

Founded in 2013 by Rob Reed. Rob has a vast array of experience of all kinds of bike riding from BMX racing,  BMX Freestyle, Velodrome riding, Road racing and Mountain Biking. Starting out in Cross Country mountain biking with his brother and dad, Rob quickly found jumps and the natural progression onto BMX. After travelling the USA competing in BMX, Rob returned home to the Cotswolds to study Sustainable Transport and Sport Science at, specialising in urban design for bicycles!

After university, Rob worked for several years with various cycling charities and organisations promoting cycling to all ages and abilities. On the weekends Rob was out in the hills guiding and coaching mountain bikers because of his love of being outdoors and pedalling.

What We do -

The Bicycle Society had developed Biking Schools and Biking Schools Partnerships, putting a cycling coach in a school one day a week, enabling everyone to cycle more though exhilarating coaching sessions during the school day and after school. The results have been phenomenal at getting more children and families on bikes and very, very good at riding. With confidence comes positivity and life long cyclists. We achieve the great success through our development pathway ensuring everyone progresses. Or schools have an average of 9% of children cycling to school, even during the winter!

Schools CPD -

In 2016 a CPD Standards Accreditation body approved our courses to up-skill school teachers with the knowledge to run and manage Balance Bike (Emerging Rider) and Learning to Ride (Developing Rider) sessions. Our course has now trained over 80 teachers and support staff to enable thousands of children with regular cycling sessions in their schools.

Consultancy -

Over the years of interacting with hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of children and families our advisors have developed numerous long term visions and high impact changes for local authorities, brands and communities to enhance the opportunities for cycling. Many of our Biking Schools have worked on local authority infrastructure changes, behaviour change studies and best practice models.

Campaigning -

The Bicycle Society campaigns to get cycling on the National Curriculum. At present, every child is taught to swim, we believe that every child in the UK should also learn to cycle from Nursery upwards. When children find the passion for cycling early, they are more likely to return to it later on in life.

Our coaches support all aspects of development through experiencing the joys of cycling. They have taught over 10,000 children to ride bikes and have trained in more than 300 London schools.

We teach children from as young as 18 months, from getting on a balance bike for the first time to pedalling, BMXing and beyond.

See our timetable of events and book a course with us directly, or if you are a school or council, contact us about getting your pupils on their bikes and how we can equip teachers to use bikes with our CPD accredited EYFS, KS1 & KS2 level courses.
